‘Sip of Wine’ brings an intriguing concentration of purple pigment to the shade garden. The color begins in the petioles and travels into the leaves, following the veins in a distinctive burst of wine-colored detail.
 
Unlike a hosta that simply blushes in spring, ‘Sip of Wine’ is reported to retain its purple leaf coloration through the season. Our plants are young enough that we can't yet verify, so we're looking forward to seeing that color story for ourselves.
 
Introduced by Bob Solberg in 2025, this hosta is so new that it has not yet been formally registered.

‘Sip of Wine’ is a second-generation seedling from H. ‘Red October’, created through a cross of (49 seedling × ‘Red October’) × 48/49 seedling. The numbered seedlings are part of Solberg's hybridization stock, making this a fascinating look at several generations of intentional crosses coming together in a new introduction.
 
Its early collector appeal is already evident: plants offered by Bob Solberg through the American Hosta Society’s online auctions have attracted significant bidding.
 
The result is a hosta where purple pigment extends beyond the petiole and into the leaf veins—a particularly interesting expression.
